Did you know that the State of Alabama provides Medicaid waivers that cover the cost of assistive technology for eligible persons with disabilities? 

The Alabama Community Transition (ACT) Waiver

 The Alabama Department of Senior Services (ADSS) can assist with applications for The Alabama Community Transition (ACT) waiver, which can help people with disabilities (who meet eligibility requirements) afford assistive technology.

 For eligible recipients, the ACT Waiver provides:

  • $15,000 (LIFETIME CAP) to cover the cost of assistive technology devices and installation services

  • $60 per month (NO CAP) for monitoring services

Programs of the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services (ADRS)
Through the ADRS SAIL program (State of Alabama Independent Living-Homebound) and the ADRS Vocational Rehabilitation Service (VRS), eligible consumers would receive a professional evaluation for assistive technology and the appropriately prescribed assistive technology customized for each individual.

For eligible recipients, the SAIL Waiver provides:

  • $25,000 (LIFETIME CAP) to cover the cost of assistive technology devices and installation services

  • Personal Emergency Response Systems (Installation and monitoring of approved devices)

ID / DD Waiver

The Intellectual Disability and Developmental Disability (ID/DD) waiver is administered by the Alabama Department of Mental Health. It has the following provisions for technology: 

  • $5,000 (PER YEAR, NO CAP) to cover the cost of assistive technology devices and installation services
