ALS

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS (often called Lou Gehrig's disease), is a degenerative disease affecting the nerve cells in both the spinal cord and the brain. ALS is progressive, meaning that the effects of the disease intensify over time. The effects of ALS differ in each patient, according to which neurons are affected. According to the Mayo Clinic, “muscle twitching and weakness in a limb, or slurred speech” are often the first signs of ALS. As the disease progresses, ALS patients often lose control of the muscles in their limbs as well as the muscles needed to eat and breathe.
