What Are Access Methods?

Access methods are the ways a person can control a communication device or computer. We’re all familiar with certain access methods, like tapping the keys on a computer keyboard or the numbers on a telephone. However, people with different physical capabilities may need different ways of controlling computers and augmentative and alternative communication devices (AAC) devices designed to help them communicate. These access methods can include touch, voice, switch-scanning, or eye-tracking.

Mass-Market Solutions Aren’t Always Solutions

Many mass-market AAC devices use touch and voice as access methods. However, these methods aren’t actually accessible to many people who need AAC devices. People who lack fine motor skills, for instance, have difficulty with touch-based access methods. Non-verbal persons cannot use devices controlled by voice. This means that the majority of mass-market AAC devices are not accessible to persons with complex physical difficulties caused by conditions such as RETT Syndrome, cerebral palsy, ALS, Parkinson’s, or severe spinal cord injury or stroke.

Smart Solutions Access Methods

For persons who are non-verbal or who have complex physical difficulties, Smart Solutions switch scanning or eye tracking software can offer a solution.

Switch scanning is based off of a tile and grid design, which is also beneficial for persons with cognitive difficulties. In switch scanning, an indicator moves through a row of items on a screen, highlighting one at a time. The user selects an item by hitting a select button. Switch scanning can also be used with a sip/puff switch and headset for persons without the motor capability to operate a switch device.

Eye tracking software is another option for people with limited motor capabilities. With eye tracking, a computer sensor identifies and tracks the pupil of a user’s eye. The person can then operate their device by blinking at or holding their focus on part of the screen.
